“Mr Lee, you can’t do this?!” Tim shouted.
“Tim, I must. I saw her last night. She was stunning, dressed in her ceremonial gown. Like the night when we were married. She looked so blissful, Tim. She needs me and I… I so need her.” Mr Lee smoothed out his long cape. It was a traditional Ma Gua cape flowing in gold and ivory colours. He wore a Chang Pao robe underneath. It was a magnificent traditional Chinese male gown exuding the grandeur of the Qing dynasty. He was truly a sight to behold.
“But, Mr Lee. She can’t have been real, surely. You said she has been dead for years.” Tim stood looking out the window of Mr Lee’s third story apartment. Outside the sun had set. He was looking down Adelaide Road. There was no movement outside. No cars driving up and down the wide street. No runners exercising. No life at all. There was no life because everyone had mysteriously vanished over six months ago. As far as Tim was concerned, the only life left was him and his friend, Mr Lee and the new predatory creatures that now walked the earth. Creatures that seemed to hunt at night. The night in which Mr Lee now wanted to venture into.
“Tim, she has been dead for years. But, I saw her, Tim. It was like the years between had never existed. She was a picture of youth and vitality. She smiled at me, Tim.” Mr Lee held Tim’s shoulder as he paused, his eyes watering. “She was alive as you or I are now, Tim.” He smoothed his robe out smartly and cleared his throat, proudly turning to the door.
“Mr Lee, please. It’s certain death out there. We don’t go out at night.” Tim knew what walking out at night meant. It terrified and frightened him.
Mr Lee glanced back at Tim. A half look. A fleeting look that was as certain as it was uncertain. “I almost died last night, Tim. That was when I saw my resplendent wife.” He took a step to the door, taking in a large breath. “If I must die to see my true love. My one true love. My golden half. Then so be it. Love is all we truly have left.”
“Mr Lee, please…?” Tim’s head dropped. He felt he was debating a losing argument. He whispered under his breath, “...What about me?”
“Don’t come with me, Tim. Saving me will not bring her back.” His voice never rose above a whisper. Somehow, it was clear as day. Tim knew what Mr Lee was doing was suicidal. The creatures that roamed the earth were meat-eating vicious predators. Mr Lee knelt to the ground. He was whispering words to himself. Words that sounded like prayer. His bare feet poked from under his gown. While he prayed, Tim was loading his two rifles and a pistol. He pulled out six grenades from his backpack, placing them on his front. The last thing he did was draw black lines across his face. Tim was ready for war.
“You have been a good friend, Tim. I do not wish you to die.” Mr Lee stood and walked to the front door. He opened it.
“I am your friend, Mr Lee, and a true friend would never leave in a time of need.”
Mr Lee smiled back at Tim.
“So be it… My friend.”
They walked down the stairs together. Tim’s heart was pumping through his chest. The last thing he wanted was for Mr Lee to die and leave him. They had spent the last month or so becoming close friends. Mr Lee had taught him so much. Self-defence. The art of flower arranging. Different recipes. His philosophy on life. Their time together was what he looked forward to each day. Now, this world had tricked his friend into walking out at night. Which from his experience was the worst thing you could do. He thought Mr Lee was losing it. Losing his mind. Surely, the vision was just a memory. A memory he must have seen while being in a life-threatening situation. Everything Mr Lee had taught him did not line up with his actions.
Mr Lee strolled out into the middle of the street. He walked slowly and gracefully. Like he had all the time in the world. Tim had his rifle in his hands. His eyes were darting everywhere. His body walked sideways, remembering his training. The night was dark. Pitch black. There were no streetlights. No lights being thrown from the houses, apartments or businesses nearby. Clouds had covered the moon. Tim knelt on one knee as he watched the lonely figure of Mr Lee stand in the middle of the road. Tim glanced between him and the far distance for any incoming danger.
Mr Lee stood there mumbling to himself. Every now and then his arms would swing and make rhythmical patterns. They were patterns Tim recognised as ones asking for strength and healing. He could hear Mr Lee’s breathing as he inhaled and exhaled. He then remained quiet for an age. Tim listened. The only noise was that of the wind. A peaceful breeze that swept the leaves across the empty road. The calm before the storm, he thought.
“Into the valley of death,” whispered Mr Lee as his arms fell in front of him and his fingers crossed. He then stood and started slowly walking forward.
