Author: Dania Voss

Book Blurb:

He returned home from battle a changed man. Her love can make him whole again.

To the outside world, Heath appears healed and integrated back into civilian life just fine after being injured in Afghanistan. But even though the battles are over, the scars, guilt, demons, and insecurities remain.

Leah has loved Heath all her life. He’s known her since the day she was born, seeing as he’s ten years older and her brother Jake’s best friend. Although he’s always regarded her as “family”, she believes they are meant to be together.

Heath has always considered Leah off limits, a forbidden temptation he shouldn’t want and can never have. But when he sees her at Jake’s wedding ceremony, he’s so overwhelmed he makes a move against his better judgment.

Still, his insecurities ultimately get the best of him. He believes she deserves more than a battle-weary Marine who suffers from combat nightmares.

Leah has a secret that will change their lives forever, but can Heath conquer his demons so they can make a way forward together—or will he abandon her when she needs him the most?

Excerpt:

Heath brought her hand to his lips and softly kissed her knuckles. Her body sizzled, but she gently pulled her hand away. She felt like crap when he frowned and seemed disappointed. She was, too. Enough with the secrets already.

He took a deep breath and nodded. “I’ve known Kyle and Grace since I was discharged. I stayed at Trace Baker’s cattle ranch in Rapture, Texas, while I was recovering and trying to decide what I was going to do after the Marines. Trace was my Sergeant Major. Envy is Rapture’s sister city, the next town over. The original Club Envidious and Golden Horns are located there.”

Leah sighed. She’d been heartbroken when Heath chose to recover from his battle injuries so far from home. She and the rest of the family had wanted to help and support him, but instead he’d been secretive and distant. He had told none of them where in Texas he was. Mystery solved.

“I know all of you were upset, but I needed the time and distance. It was best for me at that time.” Heath took her hand in his again, and this time she didn’t pull away. She scooted over a little closer, feeling his warmth and strength, sharing the booth bench seat.

“How does being a DM fit into all of this? What do you do exactly? Just watch people have kinky sex?”

Grace, Kyle, and Heath chuckled, and her cheeks heated.

“There’s no reason to be embarrassed,” Grace assured her.

“Heath, you mind me asking your girl what she knows about the lifestyle?” Kyle asked with a smirk on his face.

Grace rolled her eyes at her brother. “You just did! Very subtle. Leah, I’m so sorry about Kyle. Sometimes he’s such a pain.”

Heath kissed her cheek and glared at Kyle teasingly. “What do you know about the lifestyle, babe? Anything at all?”

Leah worried her bottom lip. She felt like an idiot as Heath, Grace, and Kyle waited for her answer. She didn’t know much. That was the bottom line. And the love of her life had been a Dungeon Monitor and who knew what else?

Although she felt anxious to learn this about Heath, she was also curious. Intrigued. Anything related to his world, she wanted to know.

She needed to tread carefully though. While they got ready for the wedding, Cassie had said not to reference anything Fifty Shades related.

“Only what I’ve read in romance e-books really.” She shrugged, hoping she appeared nonchalant and that her answer didn’t sound ridiculous or offend them. She was way out of her league.

Grace smiled wide and nodded enthusiastically. “Oh, some of the romances are so good. I especially like the paranormal ones.”

Despite everything, Leah genuinely liked Grace. She hoped they could become friends. “I like those, too! Can you imagine a wolf, lion, or tiger shifter as your man? I loved the Twilight movies.”

Grace took a sip of coffee and nodded. “If only.”

Leah noticed Heath’s and Kyle’s amused expressions as she and Grace discussed their love of romance novels. Grace stuck her tongue out at Kyle.

Kyle rolled his eyes at Grace and shook his head. “Some of those books are researched very well, others not so much. So, back to reality. Heath was trained as a club Dominant and Dungeon Monitor back in Envy.”

That answered that question. Heath had always seemed larger than life and “in charge” to her. Even when she was eight years old, his decision to join the Marines hadn’t surprised her even though he had been a genius with numbers.

“In short, a DM ensures the club is a safe environment for our members to play in,” Kyle explained.

That didn’t tell her much. “Safe, sane, and consensual, right? Is that what you mean?”

Heath smiled proudly at her, and her heart soared. Score one for me!

“Very good, babe. So DMs make sure members follow club rules. We inspect the equipment to make sure it’s working properly and that it’s being used safely. We have to listen for trouble, make sure the club safewords are followed.”

Oh! She knew this, too. “Red for stop, yellow for slow down, and green for everything’s okay, right?”

Grace smiled approvingly at her and nodded. “Yes, those are the club safewords for public play. In private, they can be whatever the play partners agree to.”

Heath continued. “That’s right. And we don’t really stand around watching people have sex. We don’t linger. We keep moving around the play space. We’re on the lookout for members who might be drunk or under the influence, even though the club has a two drink maximum and drugs are prohibited on the premises. We watch for overly aggressive voyeurs and other aggressive behaviors. Sometimes we’re asked to escort a member to their car or perform first aid if there’s an accident.”

It all made sense to her. “So DMs are like BDSM cops and first responders?”

Kyle nodded and winked at her. “Exactly. Smart girl you have here, Heath.”

But something occurred to her that made her heart ache a little for Heath. “Being a DM was another way for you to serve, wasn’t it?”

He squeezed her hand and nodded. “Yes, I suppose it was. After I was discharged, the club training was a way for me to get some control back that I’d lost after getting hurt. I haven’t done too much lifestyle-wise since coming back home from Texas.” Heath glared at Kyle as if he was angry Kyle had mentioned his association with Club Envidious.
