Charity Gray was an intelligent, inquisitive teen who disappeared fifteen years earlier. When her body is discovered, it should be a typical cold case. Before the Detroit police can get started, the FBI commandeers the investigation, with a prime suspect in mind: retired mobster Leo Agonasti.
When Agonasti slips through their grasp, he reaches out to Sergeant Jefferson Chene. Their unusual friendship draws Chene into the thick of the case. Burdened with two reluctant FBI agents, Chene is working against the clock and the feds to find the real killer.
Chene senses they are getting close to the answers. Will he be able to solve the murder and clear the old mobster of this heinous crime before time runs out?
Excerpt:
“I’m getting bored with this,” Koz said. “This dumb piece of meat either doesn’t know shit or isn’t going to cooperate. That’s bad for our rep.”
“True,” I said. “You want to take care of it?”
He flashed an evil smile and pulled a pair of latex gloves from his inside jacket pocket. “This,” he said quietly, “will be a pleasure. One less pissant mobster to darken our day.”
Spadafore stared in disbelief as Kozlowski tugged the gloves on. Then he withdrew the pistol he’d taken off the guard with the broken nose.
“You can’t shoot me! There are laws against that kind of thing.”
I waved a finger back and forth. “Laws are for law-abiding citizens. You are not one. Therefore, they don’t apply to you.”
Koz took a step back. “Don’t want to get that arterial spray on my clothes. This is a new jacket.” He extended the gun toward Spadafore.
“You can’t just shoot me!”
“Wanna bet?” Koz thumbed back the hammer and squeezed the trigger.
For the second night in a row, there was a blast of gunfire in my vicinity. Spadafore screamed as the bullet ripped into the ceiling. At the last moment, Koz had tipped the barrel up, sending the slug through the roof of the saloon. Spadafore was clutching his chest, breathing hard, eyes wide in disbelief.
“The next one will be the last thing you ever hear,” Kozlowski said. “Unless you start talking.”
