When Beth Abbott receives a surprise inheritance from her birth mother, she travels to the family’s nineteenth century mansion in Old Louisville, now a bed and breakfast. There the new mistress of Chadwick House meets the resident ghost, a little girl whose crying not only scares, but also intrigues guests. As she sets out to discover the identity of the ghost and why the child ghost appears happy to Beth, not sad, Beth is confronted by evil from the past.
Jeff Halstead, a man with many secrets, runs the bed and breakfast. But he’s more than that to Beth, and she feels their connection immediately. A psychic medium who doubts his skills, Jeff slowly uncovers the truth of their past lives. Will he be in time to reveal the identity of Beth’s enemy? Will the love they shared in the past follow them into the future?
Excerpt:
I paused at the ornate wooden front door to catch my breath, letting go of the handles of the wheeled bags. More than afraid, I experienced an odd feeling. I was embarking on an unknown journey. A huge risk. Now that I saw the house, my change of circumstances became an actuality, and the importance of the moment settled on my shoulders like a heavy burden.
I rang the doorbell and waited.
The door opened. The light glowing from the inside revealed a tall man wearing black shoes and jeans, a white turtleneck, and an open, red cotton cardigan sweater with a zipper down the front. His hair was jet back, and so were his long eyelashes that fringed blue eyes. His dark eyebrows furrowed as he gazed at me, and his eyes lit with recognition. My skin prickled because of a chill that had nothing to do with the December night.
“You’re Melissa’s daughter,” he said in a deep baritone voice.
I swallowed, looking up at him and, because of our age difference, felt very much like a misbehaving child. “Yes,” I said.
He stepped aside without a word so that I could enter. I grabbed the handles of my two wheeled bags and stumbled across the threshold into a wonderland of lights and magic.
The massive entrance hall with beamed ceilings and a crystal chandelier seemed like an English castle to me. Doors opened off the hall and I caught glimpses of lavish furniture and paintings, all antique, I supposed. A grand staircase, also impressive with its dark wood railings, led to the floors above. A live Christmas tree stood beside the stairwell, bright and festive and smelling of pine. We’d never had a real Christmas tree, and it caught my attention as much as anything in the room.
“I’m Jeff Halstead,” he said, offering me his hand.
I took his hand and immediately at his touch, an odd feeling of euphoria swept over me. His handshake was strong, decisive, unlike the wet-fish handshake of Mr. Carmichael. I gazed up into his eyes and experienced a compelling sense of awareness.

Author Biography:
The author of two popular Bluegrass romance series, Jan writes heartwarming contemporary stories about home and family, single moms, and children. Living in the horse country of Kentucky makes it easy for Jan to add small town, Southern charm to her books and the excitement of a Bluegrass horse race or a competitive horse show.
The Ghost Mountain Ranch series is a contemporary western series with a good blend of mystery and happily-ever-after romance. The Dawsons of Montana is another four-book contemporary western series.
Jan leaves her contemporary voice behind with two paranormal gothic romances, Timeless and Tangled Memories, a Romance Writers of America (RWA) Golden Heart finalist. Her historical romance, My Lord Raven, is a medieval story of honor and betrayal. It will soon be in Audible and Apple Audiobooks.
A member of Novelist, Inc., Jan self-publishes her books. She lives in Louisville, Kentucky, with two rescued dogs and two rescued cats.
