Title: Unicorns Can Be Deadly (A Discount Detective Mystery)

Author: Charlotte Stuart

Genre: Mystery

Book Blurb:

A young boy witnesses a kidnapping and flees for his life.

Private investigator Cameron Chandler jumps into action to save a teenager being chased by two men through the shopping mall where she works at a Discount Detective Agency. Unfortunately, keeping him safe puts her own family in jeopardy.

Why are people disappearing from homeless encampments? What happened to the woman who was kidnapped? And who made off with the baby of a drug-addicted mother living in her car?

Although single mom Cameron is told by colleagues that "you can't save everyone," she still takes on several clients who want to locate their homeless relatives. As she ventures into a complex world of homeless encampments where no one is safe, she finds solace in her quirky family, her partner's trivia rants, her dog's obsession with stuffed endangered species toys, and a handsome detective who may or may not be interested in more than a professional relationship.

My Review:

Cameron takes on a case that could lead her to question her penchant for saving people. Missing relatives in a homeless encampment sends Cameron into a world she’s never known. Can she help the young boy and her other clients who are missing homeless relatives?

Unicorns Can Be Deadly is a mystery filled with equal parts humor and suspense, a complex investigation, a touch of romance, and a private investigator I love. The cast of characters is quite large, but the author keeps the story moving so there’s no lag time. But it’s the case itself which will touch you.

The subject matter of this mystery is ripped from the headlines: homeless encampments. Charlotte Stuart paints a picture and humanizes the homeless. How? Through her poignant emotional narration. Trust me, it will make you think long after you finish reading.

Charlotte Stuart writes mysteries that are thought-provoking yet humorous at the same time. Sure, the mystery plot is well-executed with clues, characters, and crime. But there’s a human element which brings it all home. Trust me, you’ll love Unicorns Can Be Deadly just as much as I did.

My Rating: 5+ stars
