Excerpt:

When a step creaked underneath Bas’ foot, Nik shushed him, finger to her lips. “Aggie is right down the hall. I don’t want her to hear us.”

He squeezed her hand to show he understood. As soon as her door swung shut behind them, Bas took Nik in his arms. He hugged her and held her for several long moments. “I love you, and I would do anything for you. You know that, don’t you?”

“Mmm, uh huh.” She snuggled deeper into him, nuzzling his neck with her lips.

He took a step back and held her by the shoulders. “Let me look at you.”

“Why?”

“You’ve lost a lot of weight, and you’re pale. Not just since your dad’s accident, but before too.” He looked her up and down, searching for signs of illness. I have to find out what’s going on, even if asking makes her mad.

She moved to the bay window and looked out at the water. “I wish everyone would stop saying that to me. I’m fine and pleased I’m slimmer. I was too big before.”

“You were perfect. You’ll always be perfect to me, whether you weigh a lot or a little, but your health matters, and I don’t think you’re well.” He came up beside her and followed her gaze. Moonlight rolled a carpet of gold atop the dark water. A beautiful night for swimming. Maybe later we can take a dip together. But I can’t let the call of the water distract me. He turned her toward him and took her chin between his thumb and index finger. “Talk to me, Nik. What’s wrong? You can tell me anything.”

She lifted her chin. “I promised not to keep anything from you, and I didn’t mean to. I just didn’t have a chance to tell you.”

“Okay, tell me now.” Uneasiness wormed through his gut. Now what?

She put a hand to her mouth. When she spoke, it muffled her soft words. “It’s the strep infection. I keep taking antibiotics and think it’s gone, but as soon as I stop, the symptoms start again. It’s not going away like it should.”

He pulled her to him. “I understand why you didn’t want to tell me. I got mad at you before when you secretly took antibiotics, but I’m not upset now. Thank you for telling me. I’m worried, and I hope you’ll check with a doctor, but I’m not going to yell at you this time, I promise. I’ve changed.”

“You can say that again. Now you risk your own life for us humans.” She chuckled. “Your English has improved a lot too.” She moved to the bed and pulled down the spread, folded it and placed it on the back of a chair.

He laughed. “Yes, I’ve picked up your slang and your—what do you call them, when you collapse words together?”

“Contractions. Yep, you’ve come a long way, but one thing hasn’t changed.” Her face turned serious.

“What?” He tensed. Is there more?

“You still can’t stand Rowan.” She sat on the bed and patted the spot beside her.

He sat next to her. “Not just him. Mages in general. They’re too powerful. I don’t trust them.”

“They’ve never done anything but help people, and they leave the Nerei alone. What could you possibly hold against them?” She hiked one knee up on the bed so she could face him.

He mirrored her position, then propped his elbow on his thigh and rested his chin in his hand. “So far, they haven’t bothered the Nerei, but that could change. If they came after us, they might defeat us.”

“So, you’re afraid of them?” A slight tilt of her lips indicated she was teasing.

She knows I’d never admit that. “No. I’m merely keeping watch on them, so I’ll be prepared if they try anything.”

“And Rowan? I’m positive he would never attack the Nerei. Why don’t you like him?” The upward tilt turned down. Not teasing now.

“I think he wants you.” Bas kicked off his shoes and scooted his back against the wall.

“Are you jealous?” She kicked off her flip flops, then put her head in his lap. Her long dark hair spread over him like a blanket.

“No, but I didn’t believe him this afternoon when he said you were like a sister to him.” He ran his fingers through her hair. So beautiful. I can’t ever lose her, but what if she decides she’d prefer someone of her own kind, who she can love openly, without all the problems of being so different?

She sat up. “You saw him this afternoon? Where?”

“Out in the Gulf. He followed me in his kayak out to where I swam.”

“Why would he do that? More likely, it was a coincidence. So, he thinks of me as a sister. I guess I knew that.” She grimaced.

“You sound sorry. Do you have feelings for him?” Whether she admits it or not, I’m sure she does. His pulse throbbed in his temples with the urgency to keep her safe and keep her his.

Author Biography:

From an early age, Katherine Eddinger Smits was captivated by fairy tales. After devouring the Brothers Grimm and similar collections in her school library, she eagerly explored mythology, legends, gothic romance, fantasy, and science fiction—her curiosity for otherworldly stories knew no bounds.

Growing up near Florida’s Weeki Wachee mermaid attraction, Katherine spent countless hours swimming in the springs, pretending to be a mermaid. Though she once hoped to audition as a Weeki Wachee mermaid, her true wish was to become a real one—a dream that, unsurprisingly, never came true.
