Title: When We Dance: A Waltz with Destiny
Author: Alanna Lucas
Genre: Historical Romance, Regency Romance
Book Blurb:
Shall we dance? Left at the altar, Artemisia Germayne’s humiliation is made twice as worse by the presence in the congregation of the man who’s the bane of her existence. Why does Nigel Rochefort take such pleasure in mocking her? As rumors of Artemisia’s abandonment—and also the sudden disappearance of Philippa, her younger sister—swirl about the ton, she flees to her elderly aunt’s home in the countryside. Nigel has always taken his good fortune for granted, so when the woman for whom he has a secret tendre is about to marry his friend, the only logical thing to do is break up the wedding. But his reputation as a rake, together with his well-intentioned giving of solace to Philippa Germayne in a London park, have started yet more scandal brewing. Nigel must first clear his name to assure Artemisia’s affections. This is no simple country dance or game of seduction, but an unstoppable waltz of desire—and true love.
My Review:
Left at the altar, Artemisia blames it all on one man, Nigel, but his reasons baffle her. Artemisia is convinced she’s unattractive and after a disastrous first season, covered her mirror with a blanket so she wouldn’t have to look at her reflection. Years later, she agrees to marry a man she doesn’t love. It’s her wedding day, her special day to shine, only to discover he’s a no-show. Humiliated, she flees to the country to stay at her aunt’s estate. When her enemy, the bane of her existence, Nigel shows up, she wants to throw him in the lake. He apologizes for his behavior and continues to stalk her every movement. She can’t escape him and wonders what kind of game he’s playing. He certainly can’t harbor feelings for her. She’s ugly, clumsy, and he’s a notorious rake. But when he kisses her, everything melts away. When they dance, she floats in his arms. Can she believe his words of love and desire or is this another cruel trick?
When We Dance is an evocative enemies to lovers historical romance I couldn’t stop reading. This is book two in the series and features the brother of the hero from book one. Sidebar: Alanna Lucas is flawless when it comes to continuity in her books. If you’re like me and adore flawed character (unlike the beauties you see on the telly), you’re in for a treat. Artemisia, the heroine, has a plateful of flaws yet together, they make her beautiful. I connected with Artemisia in so many ways and the more I read, the more my heart yearned for her to find happiness. The writing is lush, vibrant, and sweeps you away. The historical accuracy is sublime, and the intricate details add incredible depth to the story. The plot moves at an excellent pace with colorful characters to interact with. The romance unfolds naturally, and it was delightful to see these two enemies fall in love. If you’re a romance reader, pick up When We Dance. If your reading jam is enemies to lovers romance, When We Dance is your next binge-read. I can’t wait for the next one in the series. Highly recommend!
