Excerpt:
A door opened across the room, and a tall, thin figure in a hooded purple robe entered. The figure approached the altar in the center of the pentagram, threw back the hood, and opened the two halves of the robe, revealing a silver-haired gentleman in a white tuxedo. Protruding from his belt were a bejeweled scabbard and the hilt of a dagger with rubies set into its pommel. The man extended his arms and began to chant in Latin. When he paused, all the guests responded in kind. All except Maara and me.
“What are they saying?” asked Maara. “A prayer?”
“It doesn’t make sense, but it sounds vaguely familiar.” I shook my head in frustration. “Wait a minute—It’s the Lord’s Prayer, but backward.”
“O-kaaaay.” Maara turned toward me. “I just crossed this religion off my list. In fact, I think I’ll go.”
“Might it be part of the act?” I speculated. “Let’s stay a bit and see what happens.”
Before we could decide one way or the other, the double doors swung open behind us. We followed the lead of the other guests, who moved aside to make an aisle. Between us walked the beautiful blonde woman who had greeted me at the door. She now wore a white robe like the others and was barefoot. Her painted toenails matched her red lips and fingernails. The ruby that still hung from her neck seemed to glow in the candlelight. She moved with measured steps, almost stately, and she kept her gaze fixed upon the man officiating the ceremony.
At last, she stood before the apparent leader in the center of the room. She loosened the knot on the golden cord and let it fall. She then shrugged off the robe so that it fell around her feet, revealing her nakedness. An audible sigh of approval went up around the room at the sight of her loveliness.
The officiate presented his left hand, and the naked woman took it. He led her to the marble altar, where she sat on its edge and then scooted inward. She lay on its top and spread her arms and legs. Her blonde hair splayed behind her head.
“She’s not very modest, is she?” mumbled Maara.
Men and women stepped forward and bound the blonde woman using the leather straps attached to the iron rings.
The officiate moved so that he hovered over the woman’s head. He removed his dagger and held it out before him. The man began a new chant, and the congregants joined in.
“Is this another backward prayer?” Maara asked.
“I don’t know. It’s not Latin. I don’t recognize it.”
The crowd in the room became more animated, their voices rising until they were shouting. The man standing over the woman turned one way then the other, presenting the dagger. As the crowd continued the deafening chant, he raised the blade as high as possible, then thrust it down, just below the woman’s left breast. He yanked the knife free, and a fountain of blood sprayed over the man’s robe and white tuxedo. The crowd erupted in ecstasy.
My stomach turned in revulsion. We had been flirting just a few minutes earlier, and now she was dead.

If you could dress up as anything or anyone this Halloween, what or who would it be and why?
A werewolf, for sure!
As a child, there was nothing I wanted more than to be a werewolf. Was that too much to ask?
I tried howling at the moon, had my Wolf Man Aurora model next to my bed at night, and tried running around scaring people in the dark--all to no effect.
When it snowed, I would go halfway out onto neighbor's lawns and then make paw prints with my fingers as far as I could reach. Then, I would carefully retrace my tracks, fetch the neighbors, and point out that someone turned into a werewolf on this lawn last night. Even kids were skeptical.
I was left with no other choice than to become a writer! (I have two novels where werewolves figure prominently!)
On the other hand, Witch Ever Way You Go involves (big surprise) witches--which I find fascinating, too. I think you will as well!
