Title: Your Turn to Die
Author: Mark Love
Genre: Mystery, Police Procedural Mystery
Book Blurb:
It was supposed to be a friendly round of paintball. But blood, not paint, covers Kyle Morrissey’s body. Though admired by the public for his charity, the businessman was no choirboy. Could it be that more than one person want him dead? Sergeant Jefferson Chene and his detective squad catch the case. With two new faces on the team, he finds himself in the unfamiliar role as mentor. He is also cautiously beginning a relationship with Simone Bettencourt, the beautiful woman he met while pursuing a serial murderer. Complicating the case are two retired gangsters, a fortune in jewels, and Detroit’s history of organized crime. But the squad must utilize every resource available to catch a killer.
My Review:
A dead body amongst a paintball course discovered brings Sgt. Chene and his detectives in between warring factions. As the suspect list grows, Chene realizes that his time is running out to catch the killer. Your Turn to Die is a gritty mystery set in the heart of Detroit. The narration is descriptive. The cast of characters is quite large. But the mystery is one that kept me guessing until the very end.
I’m a voracious mystery reader. I read at least three mystery books a week. I like my detective mysteries to be edgy, colorful, and realistic. Your Turn to Die ticks all my boxes and more.
The narration is a great companion to the world-building. Every scene is detailed as is the investigation. Mark Love takes the reader into the mind of Sgt. Chene as he uncovers clues and motivations. The narration is a huge part of why I dove into the mystery.
The characters are another reason to love Your Turn to Die. Sgt. Chene is a brilliant detective. He’s got an uncanny ability to solve crimes using logic and hard work. He also knows how to sniff out when a suspect is lying. The rest of the characters are realistic and well-written. Each character is not easy to peg down but intriguing none the less.
The plot unfolds at a good pace with false clues, dead ends, and many suspects to weed through. The writing is sophisticated yet emotive. Your Turn to Die is a brilliant little mystery and one I thoroughly enjoyed. Recommend to mystery readers.
My Rating: 5+ stars
